This sub-fond includes materials relating to the purchase of 19 Lansdowne Walk, the design and build process for the Thematic House and the Symbolic Furniture (including versions manufactured for sale), and its later conversion into The Cosmic House. Alongside material documenting the house, the Cosmic House itself and its contents have been included in this sub-fonds.

These materials were used extensively to support the refurbishment of The Cosmic House and its opening to the public as a house museum in 2021, prior to cataloguing of the Archive. It is, therefore, not possible to assert that their arrangement reflects an original order. However, where possible, Charles' order has been respected.

The labelling and arrangement of many of the files suggests that Charles used the papers extensively in writing Towards A Symbolic Architecture(1985), and the arrangement is as much an archive of the creation of that book as they are of designing the house. Where material can be explicitly linked to Towards A Symbolic Architecture, we have used the thematic tag Towards A Symbolic Architecture to provide an alternative way of grouping and researching the collection.
